Halo infinite reddit12/17/2023 ![]() Thus, we are experiencing the entire story from one static perspective (inside the forerunner structures). Some may say, “well that’s a gameplay issue” (probably not here though), but the problem is that environment is the vehicle for you to experience the story through. ![]() Nothing wrong with that, but when every campaign mission looks and feels the same aside from the first level… well you can finish that sentence lol Don’t get me wrong, I personally love it, but it’s more of a fun sandbox to play around in. Yes, they nailed the open world, but that feels more like something in the academy tab than a halo story. The one aboard a banished ship, and then one in zeta halo forerunner structures. In halo infinite you really just have 2 levels. ![]() Awesome open world, but unique levels (halo story missions or Zelda dungeons in this case) were sacrificed Yup suffers from the same problem botw did. With the banished raiding old covenant supply depots and the UNSC cobbling together what they can, it would seem easy to justify having TONS of choices, and make new areas play out differently with entirely new weapon choices. Reach had plenty of weapons that weren’t viable for MP, but made the game world feel bigger. I like the ideas behind their weapons and enemy designs, but if you intend to have a huge open world, you need a huge selection of stuff to fill it. Their goal seemed to be to make the whole game evoke The Silent Cartographer or Assault on the Control Room, but those were carefully curated, tailored experiences.Īn open sandbox world needs more sandbox, but they’ve cut the vehicles, weapons and enemies down to a pared-down selection, which works entirely against their goal. I think the most thrilling encounters in Infinite would be a filler encounter in any other Halo game, which is a shame because I really liked the idea behind implementing true boss battles. ![]() It would be impossible with their current design philosophy to have a moment like the tank rampage through Delta Halo or the showdowns against Scarabs in Halo 3.Įven the music is oddly muted during attacks, although I did like the somber, inevitable feeling of the music during the charge against the bridge. There’s no moment where your vehicle charges into enemy lines and squares off against multiple enemy wraiths arrayed on different levels (like Quarantine Zone), or your banshee dives and weaves through intense enemy anti-air. Infinite’s play through lacked true showcase moments and didn’t do enough with the verticality offered by the grappling hook (probably because the AI has no tools to really deal with it anyway, short of sniping you from across the base). And, since I can’t choose missions to replay anyway, it’s a fairly moot point. Everything else felt fairly cookie cutter. I can think of only two moments that I felt were genuinely standout missions I’d like to replay - the early escape from the ship was a thrilling moment as things blew up around you, and I really liked the rescue mission for the captured Spartan, played in the dim, red lighting. 343 got criticized for their Warzone map design in Halo 5, where every human base was precisely the same, and they’ve brought their copy-paste skills over to the campaign now instead. Occasionally, there will be exactly one ghost or chopper supporting them, or two banshees.Įvery FOB is exactly the same as the previous ones, and generally is cleared in exactly the same manner. With limited weapons, it seems every encounter has two or three jackal snipers on hills, ten grunts wandering around in the open supported by a couple pairs of shield jackals, a smattering of brutes and elites with heavier weapons, and a “leader” with more hit points. I hear a lot of praise for the sandbox, but I’m just not feeling it. In essence, I’ve already “replayed” it, by doing the same missions through the same copy-pasted areas during a single play through. This is my biggest complaint, and it’s why after beating it, I feel no urge to replay.
